## What it is

Blue-light blocking glasses (also called blue-blocking or amber lenses) are spectacles whose lenses filter a portion of short-wavelength visible light (roughly 400-500 nm, with the human circadian system most sensitive near 460 nm) before it reaches the eye. They are marketed to reduce digital eye strain, protect the retina, and improve sleep by limiting evening exposure to blue light, the wavelength range that most strongly signals the circadian system. The proposed sleep mechanism is reduced activation of intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs), which helps preserve the evening rise of the hormone melatonin. Commercial lenses vary widely and typically filter only about 10-25% of blue light unless they carry an obvious amber tint.

## What the human evidence shows

Controlled evidence for blue-light blocking glasses is mixed and, for everyday computer users, largely unsupportive: a Cochrane review of 17 randomized trials and a separate meta-analysis found they probably do not reduce eye strain or reliably improve sleep, and no protective effect on the retina has been demonstrated. Some randomized trials in specific groups, such as people with insomnia, bipolar mania, or those exposed to bright evening screens, do report modest benefits like earlier melatonin onset, shorter sleep-onset latency, or improved subjective sleep, and evening blue light itself clearly suppresses melatonin. Prolonged, aggressive blocking of blue light during the daytime may even impair alertness and cognitive performance, so timing (evening use) appears to matter. Most positive trials — including the bipolar-mania studies — used amber or orange lenses that block nearly all blue light; clear lenses that only reduce blue light have not been studied the same way, and their results may not carry over. This evidence describes the underlying blue-light/circadian mechanism and blue-blocking lenses as a category, not this specific commercial product.

## Evidence grade: Emerging evidence

- **Caveat:** Evening blue light near 460 nm genuinely suppresses melatonin, so the concept is sound. But a 2023 Cochrane review of 17 randomized trials found only low- to very-low-certainty evidence — about half of sleep trials positive, half null — and could not conclude the glasses improve sleep or reduce eye strain. Reasonable as a low-risk evening habit for heavy screen users; benefits are modest and unproven.
