## What it is

Collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body and the principal structural component of skin, tendon, cartilage and bone. Supplemental collagen peptides are short, hydrolysed chains of amino acids that are readily absorbed and supply the building blocks for the body's own collagen synthesis.

## What the human evidence shows

Collagen production declines with age, contributing to skin laxity, joint wear and connective-tissue fragility. Randomised trials of oral collagen peptides report measurable improvements in skin elasticity and joint comfort, making collagen a connective-tissue-focused element of a longevity routine.

## Evidence grade: Moderate evidence

- **Dose used in studies:** Human trials used about 2.5–15 g/day of hydrolyzed collagen peptides: skin studies 2.5–10 g/day, joint and bone studies 5–10 g/day, and muscle studies (with resistance training) 15 g/day.
- **Dose from food:** Genuinely food-obtainable: gelatin (cooked collagen) gives about 6 g per tablespoon and bone broth roughly 1–10 g per cup, but whole-food amounts vary widely, so people supplement for a standardized dose.
- **Caveat:** RCTs show modest skin-elasticity and joint benefits; many trials are industry-funded.

## Where it comes from without a bottle

Food, exercise and behaviour routes to the same pathway, each with its citation.

| Gelatin / bone broth + vitamin C, pre-exercise | Gelatin with vitamin C before loading doubled a marker of new collagen synthesis. | Am J Clin Nutr 2016 [PMID 27852613](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/27852613/) |
| Vitamin C foods (citrus, peppers, berries) | Vitamin C is essential for synthesis and maturation of collagen; deficiency impairs it. | Br J Community Nurs 2013 [PMID 24796079](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/24796079/) |
