## What it is

Inulin is a group of naturally occurring polysaccharides known as fructans (chains of fructose molecules) found in the roots of many plants, with chicory root being the richest commercial source. Because human digestive enzymes cannot break its fructose-fructose bonds, inulin passes undigested to the colon, where it is fermented by resident bacteria such as Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus, acting as a prebiotic. This fermentation yields short-chain fatty acids, including butyrate, and selectively promotes the growth of beneficial gut microbes. Inulin and its shorter-chain relative oligofructose are collectively termed inulin-type fructans and are widely used as soluble fiber supplements and food ingredients.

## What the human evidence shows

Randomized trials and meta-analyses indicate that inulin-type fructans reliably increase stool frequency and improve constipation (confirmed again in a 2025 trial using 12 g/day), selectively feed beneficial gut bacteria, and can enhance calcium absorption. Metabolic effects are real but small: across 32-55 trials, roughly 1 kg of weight loss and LDL cholesterol and triglyceride reductions of about 0.1 mmol/L, with the certainty of this cardiometabolic evidence rated low to very low; glycemic benefits appear mainly in people with prediabetes or type 2 diabetes. Some trials report no benefit, prebiotics have failed to improve irritable bowel syndrome symptoms, and inulin commonly causes gas, bloating and flatulence at higher doses. Overall the evidence points to inulin as a useful, well-tolerated functional fiber whose benefits are modest and depend on dose, type and population, rather than a proven treatment or longevity intervention. This evidence describes the inulin / inulin-type-fructan compound and its mechanism in general, not this specific commercial product.

## Evidence grade: Moderate evidence

- **Dose used in studies:** Human trials show prebiotic and metabolic effects at roughly 4–16 g/day, with many gut and cardiometabolic studies using about 10 g/day; higher doses often cause gas and bloating.
- **Dose from food:** Readily food-derived: chicory root is richest (~35–45 g per 100 g, but eaten in tiny amounts), while raw garlic (~9–16 g/100g), Jerusalem artichoke (~16–18 g/100g), onion, leeks and asparagus can supply several grams daily.
- **Caveat:** One of the best-studied prebiotic fibers: reliable for constipation relief, with small (~1 kg) average weight effects and small LDL/triglyceride reductions whose certainty is rated low to very low. Commonly causes gas and bloating at higher doses; not a proven longevity intervention.
