## What it is

Quercetin is a flavonol, a plant polyphenol found abundantly in onions, apples, berries, capers, and tea. As one of the most common dietary flavonoids, it has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and has been investigated for cardiovascular effects, particularly on blood pressure. Proposed mechanisms for its antihypertensive action include improved endothelial nitric-oxide-dependent vasodilation, inhibition of angiotensin-converting enzyme activity, and reduced oxidative stress. Quercetin is also one of the first-identified senolytic compounds, studied experimentally with the drug dasatinib to clear senescent cells.

## Its role in longevity

Meta-analyses of randomized trials indicate quercetin produces a small blood-pressure reduction—on the order of 2–3 mmHg—most apparent at doses of at least 500 mg/day and in people with hypertension rather than normal blood pressure; individual trials are mixed, and a rigorous trial of purified quercetin found no vascular-function effect. Meta-analyses found no meaningful effect on lipids, glucose, or insulin measures, and quercetin's poor, variable oral bioavailability likely explains the small effect sizes. Separately, quercetin is the 'Q' in the dasatinib-plus-quercetin senolytic drug combination: a first-in-human trial found the pair cleared senescent cells and lowered inflammatory factors, but the largest 2024 randomized trial was negative overall and an Alzheimer's trial showed only safety and feasibility. Those results belong to the drug combination in early trials, not to over-the-counter capsules. This body of evidence describes the compound quercetin and its mechanisms, not this specific commercial product.
