## What it is

Green tea is a beverage made from the unfermented leaves of Camellia sinensis and is rich in polyphenols called catechins, of which epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) is the most abundant and biologically active, accounting for a large share of total catechins. Concentrated green tea extracts standardize these catechins, often alongside caffeine. In laboratory and animal studies, the proposed metabolic mechanisms are twofold: reducing intestinal absorption of lipids (and thus calorie intake) and activating AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) in liver, muscle, and fat tissue, which lowers fat and glucose synthesis while increasing energy expenditure and fat oxidation.

## Its role in longevity

For weight and metabolic syndrome, meta-analyses of randomized trials indicate that green tea catechins produce small, generally modest effects—limited reductions in body weight (on the order of 1 kg), body fat, waist circumference, total and LDL cholesterol, blood pressure, and fasting glucose—often more evident with 12+ weeks of use, EGCG doses around 100–460 mg/day, and co-ingested caffeine. The evidence is inconsistent: several trials and reviews find no significant effect on weight, metabolic-syndrome features, or HbA1c, and the effects are frequently judged not clinically meaningful. Large cohorts, including the UK Biobank (nearly half a million participants) and Japanese studies, link habitual green tea drinking to roughly 9–13% lower all-cause and cardiovascular mortality, though such observational data cannot prove cause. Concentrated high-dose extracts carry a documented, idiosyncratic risk of liver injury—European regulators flag intakes at or above about 800 mg EGCG/day—so beverage-level intake has the best benefit-to-risk ratio. This evidence describes green tea, its catechins, and EGCG in general, not this specific commercial product, which has not itself been tested in the cited studies.
