## What it is

Olive leaf extract (OLE) is a botanical preparation derived from the leaves of the olive tree (Olea europaea L.), traditionally used in Mediterranean folk medicine. Its principal bioactive constituent is the secoiridoid polyphenol oleuropein, together with related compounds such as hydroxytyrosol, oleacein and tyrosol. These polyphenols exhibit antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-atherogenic activity and are thought to influence blood pressure partly by modulating angiotensin activity and improving endothelial function.

## Its role in longevity

In human trials, standardized olive leaf extract has most consistently produced modest reductions in systolic and diastolic blood pressure in people with prehypertension or hypertension, and several trials and meta-analyses also report small decreases in total and LDL cholesterol and triglycerides. Evidence for effects on glucose metabolism and inflammation is mixed, and some well-controlled trials, including studies of combination formulas, found no significant benefit, so the overall body of evidence is limited by small sample sizes and variable extract quality. Reported effects are generally small relative to prescription antihypertensives and are best viewed as adjunctive. This research characterizes the oleuropein-rich olive leaf compound and mechanism itself, not this specific commercial product.
