## What it is

Beta-alanine is a non-essential (non-proteinogenic) amino acid that serves as the rate-limiting precursor for the synthesis of carnosine, a histidine-containing dipeptide stored at high concentrations in skeletal muscle. Chronic oral supplementation (typically about 2-6 g/day for several weeks) can raise intramuscular carnosine content by roughly 20-80%. Carnosine acts primarily as an intracellular pH buffer during high-intensity exercise and also possesses metal-chelating, antioxidant, and anti-glycation properties.

## Its role in longevity

Meta-analyses of controlled trials indicate that beta-alanine produces a small but statistically significant overall ergogenic effect, most evident for high-intensity exercise lasting roughly 1-4 minutes, where it can increase exercise capacity and time to exhaustion and delay neuromuscular fatigue; effects on maximal strength are inconsistent. In older adults, supplementation raises muscle carnosine and may improve exercise capacity, though systematic review finds no clear benefit for muscle strength or everyday functional performance, and early findings on brain structure and metabolic health are preliminary. A dedicated safety meta-analysis found no adverse effects on clinical blood, liver or kidney markers; the main side effect is transient paresthesia (skin tingling), which can be minimized with divided or sustained-release doses. This evidence describes the compound beta-alanine and its carnosine mechanism rather than this specific commercial product.
