## What it is

A hand-grip (handgrip) dynamometer is a simple handheld device that measures the maximal isometric force a person can generate by squeezing, reported in kilograms or pounds. Grip strength reflects overall skeletal-muscle strength and depends on coordinated muscle, tendon, joint, and nervous-system function, making it a convenient proxy for global muscular fitness. Muscular strength rises through early adulthood, peaks around ages 30-39, and declines thereafter, a loss that accelerates with age and physical inactivity. Because the test is quick, inexpensive, and non-invasive, low grip strength is used clinically as a core diagnostic criterion for sarcopenia (age-related loss of muscle mass and function) and as a general marker of vitality.

## Its role in longevity

Across large prospective cohorts and meta-analyses, lower grip strength is consistently associated with higher all-cause and cardiovascular mortality, incident cardiovascular disease, disability, and, in some studies, cognitive decline and depression, often predicting outcomes as well as or better than systolic blood pressure. These associations have led researchers to propose grip strength as a new vital sign of health, and low grip strength anchors consensus definitions of sarcopenia, while reference ranges from more than 125,000 healthy adults in 21 countries allow one home measurement to be compared against age- and sex-specific norms. Importantly, grip strength is a marker or proxy of underlying physiological robustness rather than a proven cause of longevity; associations with some outcomes (such as longitudinal cognitive change) are weaker or inconsistent, and normal cut-off values differ by sex, age, and population. This evidence concerns handgrip strength as a biomarker and its measurement by dynamometry, not this specific commercial dynamometer product.

## Evidence grade: Measurement tool

- **What the grade means:** Graded as an instrument: how accurately it measures, and whether measuring it changes anything.
- **Dose used in studies:** Three squeezes per hand, seated, elbow at 90 degrees, best value recorded - and the same chair, same arm position, same time of day every time. Monthly is plenty. What matters is your own trend over years, not where you sit against a population chart.
- **What this grade does not say:** Grip strength is one of the most durable prognostic markers in epidemiology: in PURE across 17 countries and in half a million UK Biobank participants, lower grip tracked all-cause and cardiovascular mortality, and it did so after adjustment and across very different populations. This specific device also clears the bar that most consumer instruments fail - the Camry digital dynamometer has been tested head-to-head against the Jamar, the reference instrument, with excellent reliability and correlations of 0.97-0.99, so a cheap unit is genuinely measuring the thing. Two honest caveats - grip strength is a marker of overall muscle and health rather than a target in itself, and squeezing a dynamometer more often will not move it, since the intervention that moves it is resistance training, which is graded separately and is where the actual benefit lives. The second is that this is the site's second grip dynamometer: it measures exactly what the other one measures, the other is graded strong, and nothing in the evidence says a 200 kg-capacity unit tells a middle-aged adult anything a 90 kg one does not - buy one, and let price decide which.
