## What it is

Pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) therapy is a non-invasive modality in which a device—often a whole-body mat or a smaller targeted applicator—generates low-frequency, low-intensity pulses of electromagnetic energy that penetrate tissue. Proponents propose that these time-varying fields influence cellular processes such as membrane potential, ion signaling, inflammatory pathways, and osteoblast/chondrocyte activity. PEMF and related bone-growth stimulators have regulatory clearance for specific orthopedic uses such as fracture non-union, and the technology is widely marketed for joint pain and recovery.

## Its role in longevity

For osteoarthritis, meta-analyses of randomized placebo-controlled trials report short-term reductions in joint pain and improvements in physical function—though effect sizes vary widely, some high-quality reviews find little or no advantage over placebo, and shorter sessions (30 minutes or less) appeared more effective than longer ones, so 'more exposure' is not supported. For fracture healing with clinical-grade devices, a 22-trial meta-analysis found higher union rates (about 80% versus 64% with standard care), while an updated review still rates the certainty as low—and a systematic review of whole-body PEMF mats concluded the scientific evidence for their therapeutic effects is insufficient. Claims that wellness mats improve sleep, energy, or longevity rest on mechanism speculation rather than outcome trials, and at least one major insurer now formally classifies PEMF for pain as having insufficient supporting evidence. Safety is good overall; pacemakers/ICDs and pregnancy are the standard contraindications. This evidence concerns pulsed electromagnetic field exposure and its mechanisms as studied in the literature, not this specific commercial product.

## Evidence grade: Moderate evidence

- **What the grade means:** Curated grade based on the human and mechanistic evidence for this compound.
- **What this grade does not say:** Randomized-trial meta-analyses show real short-term pain and function benefits in knee osteoarthritis, and clinical-grade devices aid fracture healing — but a review of whole-body wellness mats found the evidence insufficient, and a major insurer now judges the pain evidence inadequate. Sleep, energy and longevity claims are unproven. Avoid with a pacemaker/ICD or during pregnancy.
