## What it is

A whole-body vibration (WBV) plate, or vibration platform, is a motorized device that generates rapid mechanical oscillations transmitted through the feet to the rest of the body while a user stands, squats, or performs exercises on it. The vibrations provoke rapid, largely involuntary muscle contractions through stretch-reflex activation and impose small cyclic mechanical loads on bone and connective tissue. It is used and studied both as a low-effort form of exercise and as an adjunct to conventional training, with proposed effects on bone remodeling (osteoblast and osteoclast activity), neuromuscular function and balance, circulation, and glucose metabolism.

## Its role in longevity

Randomized trials and meta-analyses, mostly in postmenopausal women and older adults, suggest whole-body vibration improves lower-limb muscle strength (knee-extension SMD about 0.7 in one 18-trial analysis), balance, and everyday function such as sit-to-stand and walking speed, and may aid glycemic control in type 2 diabetes, though effects are often small and highly dependent on the vibration protocol. The bone picture is genuinely mixed: earlier meta-analyses in postmenopausal women reported lumbar-spine density gains, but a 2025 meta-analysis in older adults found a small benefit only at the total femur, none at the femoral neck or lumbar spine, and rated the certainty low; many trials are small and low quality. Optimal settings are undefined, WBV is not a substitute for weight-bearing and resistance exercise, and popular claims about weight loss or 'lymphatic drainage' have no trial support. Benefits appear most relevant for older, deconditioned, or mobility-limited people who cannot perform conventional training. This research evaluates whole-body vibration as an exposure and its underlying mechanisms, not this specific commercial product.

## Evidence grade: Moderate evidence

- **What the grade means:** Curated grade based on the human and mechanistic evidence for this compound.
- **Dose used in studies:** ~20-50 Hz vibration frequency (typical range studied in trials)
- **What this grade does not say:** Meta-analyses in older adults show real gains in leg strength, balance and function like sit-to-stand, but many trials are small and low quality. Bone-density benefits are small and site-limited — a 2025 analysis found benefit only at the total femur, not the spine or femoral neck. Weight-loss and 'lymphatic drainage' claims have no human trial support.

  > Results of a clinical trial published in the Annals of Internal Medicine showed that older women who stood on a vibrating platform for 20 minutes a day experienced just as much bone loss over the course of the year-long trial as women who didn't use the platform.
