## What it is

A hand-grip dynamometer measures the maximal isometric force generated by the muscles of the hand and forearm, expressed in kilograms or pounds, when a person squeezes the device as hard as possible. Grip strength is widely used as a simple, quick, inexpensive and noninvasive indicator of overall muscular strength and is a core component of standard sarcopenia and frailty assessments. Mechanistically it reflects the integrated function of the musculoskeletal, neurological and endocrine systems, and it typically declines with advancing age in a curvilinear fashion.

## Its role in longevity

Across large prospective cohorts (notably the 17-country PURE study and UK Biobank) and multiple meta-analyses pooling millions of participants, lower grip strength is consistently and independently associated with higher all-cause and cardiovascular mortality, and with cognitive decline, disability, sarcopenia and frailty; in PURE it predicted death better than systolic blood pressure, and a meta-analysis of about 1.9 million adults linked higher muscular strength to roughly 31% lower all-cause mortality. Standardized weakness cut-points (e.g., the FNIH thresholds of <26 kg for men and <16 kg for women), normative reference data from more than 125,000 adults in 21 countries, and very high measurement reproducibility support its use as a clinical screening biomarker, though measurement protocol (body position, elbow angle, number of trials) materially affects readings and prognostic estimates. Honest caveat: grip strength is largely a risk marker rather than a proven causal lever, and whether raising strength lowers mortality remains unproven, although resistance training reliably improves measured strength. This evidence describes grip strength as a biomarker and the dynamometry measurement itself, not this specific commercial dynamometer product.
