## What it is

A validated home blood pressure monitor is an automated oscillometric device that estimates arterial systolic and diastolic pressure from an upper-arm cuff, allowing a person to measure their own blood pressure outside the clinic (self-measured or home blood pressure). Its reliability depends on the device having passed a recognized accuracy-validation protocol, such as ISO 81060-2 or the European Society of Hypertension protocol, because most consumer monitors sold online have never been validated. Home readings capture blood pressure across many days and settings, helping reveal white-coat and masked hypertension that a single office reading can miss.

## Its role in longevity

Across prospective cohorts and meta-analyses, home/self-measured blood pressure predicts cardiovascular events and mortality at least as well as, and often independently of, office measurement. When paired with support such as clinician-guided medication titration or education, self-monitoring produces modest but clinically meaningful reductions in blood pressure sustained for at least a year; self-monitoring alone without such co-interventions has little effect, and some trials (for example, in pregnancy) found no benefit. Device accuracy is a genuine limitation: an audit of devices sold online found only a small fraction had passed independent validation, and cuffless smartwatch readings are not a validated substitute. This evidence concerns home blood pressure measurement and the underlying oscillometric method in general, not this specific commercial product.

## Evidence grade: Strong evidence

- **What the grade means:** Curated grade based on the human and mechanistic evidence for this compound.
- **What this grade does not say:** Trials and an individual-patient meta-analysis show home monitoring lowers blood pressure only when paired with clinician-guided titration or similar support (about 3.5-6 mmHg systolic at 12 months); the device alone does little. Accuracy depends on buying an independently validated monitor and using the right cuff and technique, and most monitors sold online are unvalidated.

## In the news

- **Australian study: Many home blood pressure monitors not validated for accuracy** — American Heart Association 2020 [Read it](https://newsroom.heart.org/news/australian-study-many-home-blood-pressure-monitors-not-validated-for-accuracy)
  > The Association recommends using a blood pressure monitor with an upper-arm cuff that has been independently validated. In addition, the Association suggests taking the device to their healthcare provider to double-check it for accuracy.
- **Get the most out of home blood pressure monitoring** — Mayo Clinic 2026 [Read it](https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/high-blood-pressure/in-depth/high-blood-pressure/art-20047889)
  > Some people have spikes in blood pressure due to nervousness during a medical visit. This is called white coat hypertension. Other people whose blood pressure is OK at a medical office may have higher blood pressure elsewhere, called masked hypertension.
- **Is your home blood pressure monitor accurate?** — Harvard Health Publishing 2026 [Read it](https://www.health.harvard.edu/heart-health/is-your-home-blood-pressure-monitor-accurate-O2IUMPTQ)
  > Using a nonvalidated device to measure your blood pressure means there's no way to know if the information it provides is correct. And relying on inaccurate measurements could then affect decisions you and your doctor make about treatment.
