## What it is

A foam roller is a cylindrical tool made of dense foam used for self-myofascial release (SMFR), a self-administered form of soft-tissue massage in which a person uses their own body weight to apply rolling pressure to muscles and fascia. Practitioners press different body parts against the roller to target tight or tender areas, most commonly as part of a warm-up or post-exercise recovery routine. Proposed mechanisms for its acute effects include increased stretch tolerance, reduced musculotendinous stiffness, neural and pain modulation, and transient improvements in local circulation and arterial function, rather than lasting structural change to fascia.

## Its role in longevity

Controlled trials and meta-analyses, mostly in young, healthy adults, show that foam rolling acutely increases joint range of motion to a degree broadly comparable with static stretching, and a 2024 meta-analysis of 16 randomized trials (n=515) found it moderately reduces delayed-onset muscle soreness 24-48 hours after exercise (SMD -0.53 to -0.77), with a small carryover to sprint and strength recovery. Effects on maximal strength, power and jump performance are trivial or inconsistent, and several analyses find foam rolling is no more effective than other warm-up activities, so the evidence best supports flexibility and short-term recovery/soreness benefits rather than performance enhancement. A small crossover trial also links a single foam-rolling session to reduced arterial stiffness and improved vascular endothelial (nitric-oxide) function, though this is preliminary. Long-term structural effects on fascia, and 'detox' or anti-aging claims, have no human evidence. This body of research concerns self-myofascial release and foam rolling as a general practice and its underlying mechanisms; it does not evaluate this specific commercial product.
