## What it is

Retinaldehyde (also called retinal or RAL) is a naturally occurring metabolite of vitamin A and the direct biosynthetic precursor of all-trans retinoic acid, the retinoid that binds nuclear retinoic-acid receptors to regulate keratinocyte proliferation and differentiation and dermal collagen metabolism. In the skin, retinaldehyde is oxidized in a single enzymatic step to retinoic acid, giving it retinoid activity with greater potency than retinol while causing less irritation than retinoic acid (tretinoin) itself. It is used in topical cosmeceutical and dermatological preparations, typically at 0.05-0.1%, to improve the appearance of photoaged skin.

## Its role in longevity

Randomized controlled trials of topical retinaldehyde report improvements in fine lines, skin texture and hydration and other signs of photoaging, with tolerability better than prescription retinoic acid; in one trial a retinaldehyde cream matched a series of glycolic-acid peels on crow's-feet depth over eight weeks, and split-face testing shows objective, instrument-measured wrinkle and elasticity gains versus vehicle. Mechanistic and in vivo human studies of the broader retinoid pathway show that conversion to retinoic acid stimulates procollagen synthesis and suppresses collagen-degrading matrix metalloproteinases in aged and sun-damaged skin. However, retinaldehyde-specific trials are relatively few, small and short, often industry-linked, and they measure appearance endpoints rather than systemic aging; critical reviews caution that high-quality clinical evidence for cosmeceutical retinoids (as distinct from prescription tretinoin) remains limited. Much of the deepest mechanistic evidence derives from retinoic acid and retinol rather than from retinaldehyde directly. This evidence describes topical retinaldehyde and the retinoic-acid pathway it feeds, not this specific commercial serum product.

## Evidence grade: Moderate evidence

- **What the grade means:** Curated grade based on the human and mechanistic evidence for this compound.
- **Dose used in studies:** 0.05–0.1% topical, applied nightly
- **What this grade does not say:** Several small RCTs (n = 23–40, 8–12 weeks) show objective, instrument-measured improvements in wrinkles, texture and pigmentation, with less irritation than prescription tretinoin — one cream matched a series of glycolic-acid peels. Trials are short, small and often industry-linked, and they measure appearance, not systemic aging.
