## What it is

Vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid) is a water-soluble antioxidant found naturally in high concentrations in healthy skin, where it supports collagen synthesis and helps defend against ultraviolet-induced oxidative damage. Because dietary vitamin C reaches the skin poorly, it is commonly formulated into topical serums and creams so it can be absorbed directly. As an essential cofactor in collagen biosynthesis, ascorbic acid promotes the formation and stabilization of collagen fibers while neutralizing reactive oxygen species generated by sun exposure and pollution, and it also inhibits tyrosinase, the enzyme driving melanin production, which underlies its use for uneven pigmentation. L-ascorbic acid is chemically unstable, so a product's concentration, pH and packaging strongly influence how effective it is.

## Its role in longevity

In controlled studies, topically applied vitamin C has produced measurable improvements in photoaged skin, including reductions in fine lines and wrinkles, increased dermal collagen and elastic-tissue repair, and modest additional photoprotection when layered under sunscreen. Evidence is relatively strong for wrinkle appearance, skin texture and pigmentation, but many trials are small, use differing concentrations and formulations, and a Cochrane review found only limited controlled data for ascorbic acid specifically. Benefits generally require consistent use over weeks to months and depend heavily on the formulation's stability, and they are cosmetic and dermatologic — topical vitamin C is not a systemic or longevity intervention. This evidence describes topical L-ascorbic acid and its mechanisms in general, not this specific commercial serum.

## Evidence grade: Moderate evidence

- **What the grade means:** Curated grade based on the human and mechanistic evidence for this compound.
- **Dose used in studies:** 5–20% L-ascorbic acid, pH below 3.5, applied consistently for weeks to months
- **What this grade does not say:** A small set of RCTs and systematic reviews supports modest improvements in photoaging signs and pigmentation with consistent long-term use. Results depend heavily on formulation stability, and the benefits are cosmetic and dermatologic — not a systemic or longevity effect.
