Although it bears no structural resemblance to retinoids, gene-expression profiling shows it can act as a functional analogue of retinol, up-regulating collagen types I, III, and IV and other genes associated with skin renewal. It also has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, including scavenging of reactive oxygen species. It is marketed in serums and creams as a gentler, plant-derived alternative to topical retinol. ## Its role in longevity A 12-week randomized, double-blind trial found topical bakuchiol comparable to retinol for reducing wrinkles and hyperpigmentation while causing less scaling and stinging, and additional clinical and laboratory studies report benefits for photoaging, acne, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. However, reviewers caution that the evidence base is small: most trials are unblinded, use combination formulations, and carry a high risk of bias, so systematic reviews grade the antiaging evidence as modest and describe bakuchiol as promising but not yet proven against the decades of data behind retinoids. Its best-established advantage is tolerability, including possible daytime use without the photosensitivity of retinol.
