## What it is

Glycolic acid is the smallest alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA), a water-soluble compound originally derived from sugarcane and other fruits and now largely produced synthetically for cosmetic use. Its small molecular size allows it to penetrate the stratum corneum, where it weakens the cohesion between corneocytes to exfoliate dead cells; at higher concentrations (typically 20-70%) it is used for professional chemical peels. Beyond surface exfoliation, human biopsy studies show that months of topical application can raise type I collagen mRNA and hyaluronic acid content in the skin, and in vitro work shows direct stimulation of fibroblast collagen synthesis—evidence of dermal matrix remodeling, not just exfoliation.

## Its role in longevity

Randomized and controlled human trials, together with histologic and in vitro studies, suggest that topical glycolic acid and related AHAs can improve skin texture, discoloration and some markers of photoaging: in one 22-week vehicle-controlled trial an 8% glycolic acid cream gave modest but statistically significant improvement in overall photodamage and sallowness, and tissue studies show increased epidermal thickness, collagen density and improved elastic fibers. Effects on wrinkles are more modest and cumulative, and not always statistically significant; higher-strength peels can irritate the skin and increase photosensitivity, and regulators have warned consumers against using chemical-peel products without professional supervision—leave-on serums are a milder risk class. Head-to-head trials sometimes favor retinoids for elasticity or find retinaldehyde creams comparable and better tolerated than glycolic acid peels, and many pigmentation trials tested glycolic acid peels combined with other topical agents rather than glycolic acid alone. This evidence describes glycolic acid and AHAs as a class and their mechanisms, not this specific commercial serum, which has not itself been tested in the cited studies.
