## What it is

Hyaluronic acid (HA, hyaluronan) is a glycosaminoglycan and a major component of the skin's extracellular matrix, where it can bind up to roughly 1,000 times its weight in water and is described as the key molecule controlling skin moisture. Its content and synthesis decline with age, contributing to reduced hydration and elasticity and to the appearance of fine lines. Applied topically in creams and serums, HA acts as a hygroscopic humectant that draws and holds water in the stratum corneum and superficial skin; low-molecular-weight HA penetrates more deeply, while high-molecular-weight HA forms a surface hydrating film—the rationale for multi-weight serums. It is widely used in cosmeceuticals for hydration and anti-aging.

## Its role in longevity

Multiple randomized and controlled clinical studies of topical HA formulations report significant improvements in skin hydration and elasticity, with low-molecular-weight HA associated with reduced wrinkle depth; HA serums have also improved skin surface topography and measured HA content in treated skin. Oral HA now has several placebo-controlled randomized trials (and recent meta-analytic support) showing improved hydration, elasticity and wrinkle scores over 8-12 weeks, though most of these trials are small and industry-funded. However, effects on wrinkles are generally modest, most topical trials are short (weeks to a few months), many test HA combined with other active ingredients, and much of the improvement reflects surface hydration and plumping rather than structural rebuilding of the dermis. This evidence describes hyaluronic acid and its formulations in general, not this specific commercial serum.

## Evidence grade: Moderate evidence

- **What the grade means:** Curated grade based on the human and mechanistic evidence for this compound.
- **Dose used in studies:** Studied topical creams use about 0.1% HA; oral HA trials used 120 mg/day for 8-12 weeks
- **What this grade does not say:** Controlled studies consistently show improved skin hydration and elasticity with modest fine-line reduction; effects are surface-level and reversible, not structural rejuvenation. Oral HA has placebo-controlled support but the trials are small and mostly industry-funded. Not proven for longevity.
