## What it is

Sunscreens are topical photoprotective products that reduce the amount of ultraviolet (UV) radiation reaching the skin. Mineral (inorganic) sunscreens use zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide, which reflect, scatter and absorb UV across a broad range; zinc oxide in particular provides broad UVA-to-UVB coverage, and these two mineral filters are currently the only UV filters the FDA classifies as generally recognized as safe and effective. Chronic UV exposure drives 'photoaging' largely through reactive oxygen species and induction of matrix metalloproteinases that degrade dermal collagen and elastic fibers, producing wrinkles, laxity and pigmentary change. Regular broad-spectrum sunscreen use is intended to limit this cumulative photodamage.

## Its role in longevity

In a randomized community-based trial in Australia, adults assigned to daily sunscreen showed no detectable increase in skin aging over 4.5 years and about 24% less photoaging than discretionary users; 10-year follow-up of the same cohort found daily use halved new melanomas and reduced invasive melanomas by roughly 73%, and a 2018 meta-analysis supports a protective association. Landmark trials also show regular sunscreen reduces solar (actinic) keratoses and squamous cell carcinoma. The photoaging benefit is real but the volume of high-quality evidence is limited, and a Cochrane review found no clear difference in basal or squamous cell carcinoma between daily and discretionary use in the one eligible trial, underscoring residual uncertainty. Observational data also caution that sunscreen can prolong intentional sun exposure when used to extend time in the sun. This evidence concerns UV filters and photoprotection in general, not this specific commercial sunscreen product.
