## What it is

Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA, thioctic acid) is a naturally occurring sulfur-containing compound made in mitochondria, where it acts as a cofactor for energy-producing enzymes. Both ALA and its reduced form, dihydrolipoic acid, are potent antioxidants that scavenge reactive oxygen species, chelate metals and regenerate other antioxidants such as vitamins C and E and glutathione, and ALA additionally has anti-inflammatory activity. Because it is both water- and fat-soluble it can act throughout the cell, and topical creams for photoaged skin typically use concentrations in the 1-5% range.

## Its role in longevity

In skin aging, ultraviolet-driven reactive oxygen species and matrix-metalloproteinase activation degrade collagen and contribute to roughness and wrinkles, the pathway a topical antioxidant aims to counter. The strongest human evidence is a randomized, split-face trial in which a 5% alpha-lipoic acid cream reduced facial skin roughness more than vehicle after 12 weeks (50.8% vs 40.7% on laser profilometry), supported by a smaller placebo-controlled study of an ALA nanostructured gel that improved fine lines without irritation; however, reviews note that controlled long-term human trials remain limited, one comparative assessment ranked ALA's protective capacity below several other antioxidants, and most commercial products are untested at the studied concentrations. The plausible benefit is modest improvement in skin texture and fine lines, not systemic anti-aging. This evidence describes topical alpha-lipoic acid and its antioxidant/anti-inflammatory mechanism itself, not this specific commercial product.
