## What it is

An indoor CO2 (carbon dioxide) air-quality monitor measures the concentration of carbon dioxide in occupied spaces, typically reported in parts per million (ppm). Because humans exhale CO2, indoor concentrations rise when ventilation is inadequate, so CO2 is widely used as a practical proxy for ventilation rate and for the accumulation of other indoor pollutants. Outdoor air is roughly 400 ppm, whereas poorly ventilated rooms, classrooms, and bedrooms can exceed 1,000-3,000 ppm.

## Its role in longevity

Controlled human-exposure experiments have found that CO2 at concentrations common indoors (around 1,000-2,500 ppm) can reduce scores on tests of decision-making and higher-order cognition, and observational, real-world, and meta-analytic studies link higher ventilation (lower CO2) to better task performance in offices and schools; field studies in real bedrooms associate better ventilation with improved sleep quality and next-day freshness. The evidence is not uniform, however: some experiments found no cognitive effect even at very high CO2, and critical reviews note inconsistency, confounding by co-pollutants, and uncertainty about CO2's direct role versus ventilation in general. Monitoring CO2 lets occupants identify under-ventilated spaces and add fresh air—but the monitor itself has no direct health effect; the benefit depends on acting on the readings. This evidence concerns indoor CO2 and ventilation as an exposure and its links to cognition and sleep, not this specific commercial monitor.
