## What it is

Polyphenols are a large and diverse family of naturally occurring compounds produced by plants, characterized by multiple phenolic rings, and are abundant in fruits, vegetables, tea, coffee, cocoa, red wine, olive oil, whole grains, and legumes. Major subclasses include flavonoids (such as flavanols, flavonols, anthocyanins, and isoflavones), phenolic acids, stilbenes (such as resveratrol), and lignans. They are among the most abundant antioxidants in the human diet and are studied for anti-inflammatory, vascular, metabolic, and neuroprotective effects, though their oral bioavailability is generally low and varies widely by compound. A supplement of this type delivers a mix of such plant-derived polyphenols.

## Its role in longevity

Observational cohorts consistently link higher dietary and urinary polyphenol (and flavonoid) intake to lower all-cause and cardiovascular mortality—a meta-analysis of 16 cohorts (462,194 adults) found roughly 13–15% lower mortality with higher flavonoid intake—and a 2025 UK Biobank analysis tied greater flavonoid diversity to 6–20% lower mortality and chronic-disease incidence. Polyphenol-rich foods are also a recurring feature of long-lived 'Blue Zone' diets. Trials of supplements give a more mixed picture: a meta-analysis of 281 randomized trials found modest improvements in blood pressure, lipids, and glucose markers, but the large COSMOS cocoa-flavanol trial did not reduce total cardiovascular events (only cardiovascular death), and single-compound results are inconsistent. Evidence is strongest for varied, polyphenol-rich dietary patterns; this blend itself has not been tested in human trials. This evidence describes dietary polyphenols and their component compounds generally, not this specific commercial product.

- **Dose used in studies:** As a generic blend, dosing varies by formula; studied single polyphenols differ widely (e.g. resveratrol 150–500 mg/day, EGCG 300–800 mg/day). No single established dose applies to mixed blends.
- **Dose from food:** Polyphenols are abundant in everyday foods: berries, dark chocolate/cocoa, green tea, coffee, red wine, olive oil, nuts and colorful produce can supply hundreds of milligrams to over a gram daily through a varied diet.
- **What this grade does not say:** Large cohorts link higher and more varied flavonoid intake to lower mortality, and a 281-trial meta-analysis found modest improvements in blood pressure, lipids, and glucose markers. But much of the evidence is observational (healthy-eater confounding), supplement trials use heterogeneous single compounds, and this exact blend has never been tested in a human trial—expect modest effects at most.
