## What it is

Relative humidity (RH) is the amount of water vapor in the air expressed as a percentage of the maximum the air can hold at a given temperature. Indoor RH commonly falls in cold months, when heating dries the air, and can climb above comfortable levels in warm, humid climates. A smart humidity monitor (a hygrometer) continuously tracks indoor RH so occupants can keep it within a target band—frequently cited as roughly 40-60%—by using humidifiers, dehumidifiers, or ventilation. Both very low and very high indoor humidity have been linked to specific effects on respiratory infection, the eyes, the skin, and indoor allergens.

## Its role in longevity

Research links low indoor humidity to impaired airway mucociliary clearance and weakened innate antiviral defense, greater survival and airborne transmission of influenza and other respiratory viruses, and irritation of the eyes, skin, and airways; conversely, high humidity favors dust mites, mold, and allergen growth. Several reviews and a multinational COVID-19 analysis converge on an intermediate band of about 40-60% RH as most favorable for health. The evidence is not unanimous: a Cochrane review of indoor-air humidification found only low-certainty benefit for dry-eye symptoms, little effect on dry nose or skin, and no trials reporting infection outcomes; some modeling studies conclude ventilation reduces respiratory-virus risk more effectively than humidification, and no trials have tested humidity monitors themselves. This evidence concerns indoor relative humidity as an exposure and the biology of the airway, viruses, and allergens, not this specific commercial monitor.

## Evidence grade: Moderate evidence

- **What the grade means:** Curated grade based on the human and mechanistic evidence for this compound.
- **Dose used in studies:** Target indoor relative humidity of roughly 40-60%
- **What this grade does not say:** The link between low indoor humidity and dryness symptoms, impaired airway defense and virus transmission is well supported, and 40-60% RH is the consensus target. But interventional evidence is thin: a Cochrane review found only low-certainty benefit from humidification itself, and there are no outcome trials of humidity monitors—the device enables the intervention rather than being the intervention.
