## What it is

An anti-noise white-noise sleep system is a device that emits steady broadband sound to mask intermittent nighttime environmental noise — such as road, rail, and aircraft traffic — so that abrupt sound events are less likely to fragment sleep. Its rationale rests on two linked bodies of research: studies of transportation noise as an environmental cardiovascular risk factor, and studies of acoustic ("sound") masking as a non-pharmacological sleep aid. Nighttime traffic noise is thought to harm health indirectly, by fragmenting sleep and raising stress-hormone and oxidative-stress signaling, which in turn promote endothelial dysfunction, higher blood pressure, and inflammation.

## Its role in longevity

A large epidemiological and mechanistic literature links chronic nighttime transportation noise to higher blood pressure and increased risk of ischemic heart disease, and human field and imaging studies show that simulated nocturnal traffic noise can acutely impair endothelial function and raise arterial pressure, plausibly through sleep fragmentation and stress-hormone and oxidative-stress pathways. On the masking side, a 2025 meta-analysis of 12 randomized trials found white noise improved subjective sleep quality in adults and prolonged sleep in infants, and laboratory studies show it reduces arousals in loud environments such as intensive care units. However, the most rigorous systematic review to date graded the evidence that continuous noise improves sleep as very low quality, and recent experimental work indicates that broadband noise is itself processed by the sleeping brain and can alter sleep architecture — in one study, earplugs outperformed noise masking against traffic noise — so masking is not physiologically neutral and is best reserved for genuinely noisy settings at low volume. Critically, this evidence concerns the underlying exposures, not this specific commercial device, and no study has tested whether masking traffic noise with a white-noise system reduces cardiovascular risk.
