## What it is

An acupressure mat (also called a spike mat or mechanical needle-stimulation pad) is a firm cushion studded with thousands of hard plastic points, commonly sold together with a matching spiked neck pillow, on which a person lies or leans so the points press against the skin and underlying tissues. It is a self-administered form of acupressure - a component of traditional Chinese medicine in which manual pressure is applied to defined body points (acupoints) rather than the fine needles used in acupuncture. Proposed mechanisms include stimulation of cutaneous pressure and pain receptors, increased local blood flow, and release of endorphins, which are thought to promote muscle relaxation and reduce perceived stress.

## Its role in longevity

Clinical evidence relates chiefly to the underlying technique of acupressure/acupoint stimulation, which randomized trials and meta-analyses associate with modest improvements in chronic low back and knee-osteoarthritis pain, sleep quality, cancer-related fatigue, and anxiety - and, in meta-analyses in older adults, with better sleep and quality of life - alongside a favorable safety profile. Direct evidence for the physical mat is thinner: small studies suggest it can lower perceived stress and ease muscle tension, but the one controlled trial of regular mat use found it lowered subjective stress no more than simply lying down and relaxing, with no measurable change in blood pressure, heart rate or pain thresholds, and reviewers repeatedly note high risk of bias, heterogeneity, and possible placebo effects. On balance the mat appears low-risk and may offer short-term relief of tension, pain, or stress, but is not a substitute for medical treatment and is generally not advised for people who are pregnant or who have thin skin, bleeding disorders, or poor circulation. This evidence describes acupressure/acupoint stimulation and spike-mat exposure in general, not this specific commercial product.

## Evidence grade: Emerging evidence

- **What the grade means:** Curated grade based on the human and mechanistic evidence for this compound.
- **What this grade does not say:** Evidence for the mat itself is very thin: the only controlled trial found daily mat use reduced subjective stress no more than simply lying down and relaxing, with no change in blood pressure, heart rate or pain thresholds. Better evidence exists for targeted acupoint acupressure (sleep, some pain), but it may not transfer to blunt whole-back mats. A low-risk relaxation aid, not a proven pain or longevity intervention.
