# Trans-resveratrol: sirtuins, and the evidence

*Resveratrol is the polyphenol behind the 'French paradox,' studied for activating sirtuin longevity pathways. Here is the human evidence and what to look for.*

## What resveratrol does

**Trans-resveratrol** — the active form — is studied for activating sirtuins (SIRT1), the same pathway engaged by caloric restriction. Dietary amounts from red wine are tiny, and absorption is poor, so a standardized trans-resveratrol supplement (often paired with fat or piperine) is the practical route. Many stacks combine it with [NMN](https://magellanlongevity.com/best-nmn.html).

## Evidence detail

### Purovitalis Liposomal Trans-Resveratrol

- **Evidence grade:** Moderate evidence
- **Dose used in studies:** Human trials span ~150 mg/day to 2 g/day; ~500 mg/day raised SIRT1 activity. Evidence suggests a U-shaped curve, with ~1 g/day worsening some lipid markers — more is not better.
- **Dose from food:** Red wine carries only ~0.2–5.8 mg per liter, so a 5-oz glass gives roughly 0.05–1.5 mg; grape skins and peanuts add trace amounts. Reaching a 150–500 mg trial dose from food alone is impractical.
- **What the grade does not say:** Meta-analyses of randomized trials show small improvements in endothelial function and C-reactive protein, and one 24-month trial found cognitive and cerebrovascular benefits in postmenopausal women — from a single research group, awaiting replication. No trial shows effects on cardiovascular events, dementia or lifespan, the sirtuin longevity mechanism remains preclinical, and liposomal superiority over plain resveratrol is unproven in humans.

## Frequently asked questions

### Does resveratrol actually work?

It reliably engages sirtuin pathways in the lab; human outcome data are mixed and evolving. Each product links to the current evidence.

### What is the resveratrol dose?

Trials commonly use 150–500 mg/day of trans-resveratrol, taken with fat for absorption.

### Can you take resveratrol with NMN?

Many longevity stacks pair NMN (an NAD⁺ precursor) with trans-resveratrol because sirtuins depend on NAD⁺.

### Trans-resveratrol vs regular resveratrol?

Trans-resveratrol is the biologically active isomer; look for products standardized to it.
