*The cheapest twenty-one items in the catalog — and, awkwardly for the price ladder, some of the best-evidenced ones on the whole site.*

## What this stack is

Every item here is under $25, and the tiers are built so each one stands alone: a five-item everyday core for about $100, a metabolic tier, a brain-and-methylation tier, and the cheapest shelf in the catalog — topical pain relief starting at $9. Nothing was included merely for being cheap. Each pick had to have a real human trial or meta-analysis behind it, which is why several items here have stronger evidence than anything in the Prime Stack.

## Who it is for

Anyone starting out, anyone on a fixed budget, and anyone who wants to know how much of the evidence-backed longevity shelf is actually reachable for the price of one premium wearable. Also a sanity check for people already spending far more.

## How to run it

Start with Tier 1 alone and stay there for a month — five items is enough to matter and few enough to notice a reaction. Add one tier at a time, and one new item at a time within it. Take fish oil with food, magnesium and glycine in the evening, alpha-lipoic acid on an empty stomach, and creatine at any time of day as long as it is daily.

## Why these ingredients

The interesting finding when you sort the catalog by price from the bottom is how little the evidence quality drops. Here is what that means in practice.

### The cheap end of the shelf is where the Cochrane reviews live

Topical diclofenac has a Cochrane review in which about 60% of participants had much reduced pain. Zinc for the common cold has a Cochrane review. Creatine has an ISSN position stand calling it the most effective ergogenic supplement with an extensive safety record. Omega-3 has cardiovascular-outcome meta-analyses. None of these costs more than $25. Old, generic, well-studied compounds are cheap precisely because nobody holds a patent on them.

### The whole stack costs less than the fourth-cheapest item in the Prime Stack

Twenty-one items here total under $400. A single mid-tier smartwatch costs more, and the flagship chamber costs roughly twenty-five times the entire page. That is worth sitting with before deciding where a longevity budget goes.

### Cheap does not mean small effects

Beetroot nitrate lowered 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure by 7.7/5.2 mmHg in a randomized trial of hypertensive patients — an effect size comparable to a first-line antihypertensive drug, from a $21 product. Berberine lowered HbA1c by about 0.63% across 37 trials. These are clinically meaningful numbers at grocery-item prices.

### The core five are chosen for coverage, not for enthusiasm

Magnesium, omega-3, zinc, creatine and glycine cover sleep, cardiovascular lipids, immune function, muscle and connective tissue between them, with minimal overlap and few interactions. They are the five that most consistently survive contact with the trial literature, not the five with the most exciting mechanisms.

### The topical tier is the cheapest real medicine in the catalog

Four of the six items in Tier 4 are regulated over-the-counter drugs rather than supplements — diclofenac, lidocaine, capsaicin, methyl salicylate. They act where you put them, largely avoid systemic exposure, and start at $9. For localized joint or muscle pain this tier frequently outperforms anything oral in the stack.

### Where the evidence is weak, this page says so

Alpha-lipoic acid's 4-year NATHAN 1 trial improved symptoms but missed its primary endpoint. Silymarin's support is a review rather than an outcome trial. Being cheap does not exempt an item from the same honesty applied to the $5,999 chamber — the evidence line under each item is the one that matters.

## Tier 1 · The everyday core — five items, about $103 total

If you buy nothing else on this page, buy this tier. Broad coverage, minimal overlap, and the strongest evidence-to-price ratio in the catalog.

| Ingredient | What it does | Dose | Evidence | Citations |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| [Magnesium Glycinate](https://magellanlongevity.com/p/136.md) | Sleep, muscle relaxation and a cofactor in hundreds of enzymatic reactions. The glycinate form is the gentlest on the gut of the common salts. | 200–400 mg elemental magnesium in the evening. | In a 155-person randomized trial, 250 mg elemental magnesium as bisglycinate improved insomnia severity versus placebo at 4 weeks (ISI −3.9 vs −2.3, p=0.049). A small effect (d=0.2), larger in people with low dietary magnesium. | [1] |
| [Omega-3 EPA/DHA Fish Oil](https://magellanlongevity.com/p/128.md) | EPA and DHA for cardiovascular risk and as the structural fat that cell and nerve membranes are built from — the one supplement here with hard outcome data. | About 2 g/day combined EPA + DHA, with a meal. | A systematic review and meta-analysis found omega-3 fatty acids reduced cardiovascular mortality and improved cardiovascular outcomes. | [2] |
| [Zinc Picolinate](https://magellanlongevity.com/p/133.md) | A catalytic and structural cofactor for hundreds of enzymes and a direct input to immune function. Mild deficiency is common and cheap to correct. | 15–30 mg/day with food. Do not run high doses long-term — sustained excess zinc depletes copper. | A Cochrane review found zinc was associated with a significant reduction in the duration of common-cold symptoms. | [3] |
| [Creatine Monohydrate](https://magellanlongevity.com/p/123.md) | The best-evidenced sports supplement that exists, and increasingly studied for muscle preservation and cognition with age rather than just performance. | 3–5 g/day, every day, timing irrelevant. No loading phase needed. | An International Society of Sports Nutrition position stand concluded creatine monohydrate is the most effective ergogenic nutritional supplement for high-intensity exercise and lean mass, with an extensive safety record. | [4] |
| [Glycine Powder](https://magellanlongevity.com/p/125.md) | The most abundant amino acid in collagen, a methylation substrate, and a mild sleep aid — three jobs from one of the cheapest powders on the shelf. | 3 g before bed. | Glycine improved daytime sleepiness and fatigue induced by acute sleep restriction. | [5] |

## Tier 2 · Metabolic & cardiovascular add-ons — all $20–$22

Blood sugar, blood pressure and vascular function. Add this tier second; two of these can lower blood glucose, so watch the flags if you take diabetes medication.

| Ingredient | What it does | Dose | Evidence | Citations |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| [Berberine HCl 500 mg (AMPK)](https://magellanlongevity.com/p/9.md) | Activates AMPK, the cell's low-energy sensor. The closest thing on the cheap shelf to a metabolic drug, and it behaves like one. | 500 mg two to three times daily with meals. | Across 37 randomized trials (n=3,048) in type 2 diabetes, berberine lowered fasting glucose by about 0.82 mmol/L and HbA1c by about 0.63% without increasing hypoglycemia — though the underlying trials were mostly small and of variable quality. | [6] |
| [Beetroot / Dietary Nitrate](https://magellanlongevity.com/p/202.md) | Dietary nitrate converts to nitric oxide and widens blood vessels. Pound for pound the largest blood-pressure effect on this page. | About 400 mg nitrate daily — roughly one concentrated beetroot shot. | In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in 68 hypertensive patients over 4 weeks, daily nitrate-rich beetroot juice lowered clinic blood pressure by 7.7/2.4 mmHg and 24-hour ambulatory pressure by 7.7/5.2 mmHg, improved endothelial function by about 20%, with no tachyphylaxis. | [7] |
| [Quercetin Capsules](https://magellanlongevity.com/p/105.md) | A flavonoid with antihistamine-like and vascular effects, and one half of the most-studied senolytic pairing. | 500 mg once or twice daily. | Quercetin supplementation significantly decreased systolic blood pressure across the pooled trials. | [8] |
| [Taurine](https://magellanlongevity.com/p/124.md) | An amino acid concentrated in heart and muscle tissue, with a plausible but not yet proven role in cardiovascular aging. | 1–3 g/day. | A meta-analysis of 10 studies found oral taurine improved endurance exercise performance with a small-to-moderate effect. The longevity claims rest on animal data, not this trial. | [9] |
| [Alpha-Lipoic Acid (ALA)](https://magellanlongevity.com/p/129.md) | A both-fat-and-water-soluble antioxidant that regenerates other antioxidants and is used specifically for nerve-related symptoms. | 600 mg/day on an empty stomach. | In the 4-year NATHAN 1 trial, alpha-lipoic acid improved neuropathy symptoms but did not significantly improve the primary neuropathy-impairment composite — symptom relief, with disease modification unproven. | [10] |

## Tier 3 · Brain, methylation & antioxidant support — all $19–$24

Cognition, homocysteine and liver support. The most optional tier here — add it once the first two are established.

| Ingredient | What it does | Dose | Evidence | Citations |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| [Lutein and Zeaxanthin](https://magellanlongevity.com/p/120.md) | Carotenoids that concentrate in the retina and in brain tissue, filtering blue light and supporting visual processing speed. | 10 mg lutein + 2 mg zeaxanthin daily with a fat-containing meal. | A randomized trial reported improved cognitive performance — focus, episodic memory and learning, and visuospatial working memory — with supplementation. | [11] |
| [Betaine (TMG)](https://magellanlongevity.com/p/132.md) | A methyl donor that lowers homocysteine through a route independent of folate and B12, which matters if your homocysteine stays high despite B vitamins. | At least 4 g/day — the dose at which the trials showed an effect. | Across 5 randomized trials at 4 g/day or more, betaine lowered plasma homocysteine by a pooled 1.23 µmol/L versus placebo. | [12] |
| [L-Methylfolate (5-MTHF)](https://magellanlongevity.com/p/130.md) | The already-active form of folate, which bypasses the MTHFR conversion step some people carry a reduced-function variant for. | 400 µg–1 mg/day for general use; the depression-augmentation trials used 15 mg/day. | Adjunctive L-methylfolate modestly improved antidepressant response versus placebo (RR 1.25 for HAMD-17 response; SMD −0.38). | [13] |
| [Silymarin (Milk Thistle)](https://magellanlongevity.com/p/112.md) | Milk thistle extract, used for liver support and studied across the components of metabolic syndrome. | 200–400 mg/day standardized to silymarin. | A review reports antioxidant, lipid-lowering, antidiabetic and hepatoprotective effects. Note this is a review rather than an outcome trial — the weakest evidence tier on this page. | [14] |
| [Green Tea EGCG Extract](https://magellanlongevity.com/p/106.md) | Green tea catechins, which activate AMPK and modestly reduce fat absorption. The cheapest AMPK-adjacent option after berberine. | Take with food, and keep total EGCG at or under about 300 mg/day. | Reported to reduce body weight, alleviate metabolic syndrome, and help prevent diabetes and cardiovascular disease. | [15] |

## Tier 4 · The cheapest shelf in the catalog — topical pain relief ($9–$19)

Four of these six are regulated over-the-counter drugs, not supplements. They work where you apply them and largely avoid systemic exposure — which is why this is the best-evidenced tier on the page as well as the cheapest.

| Ingredient | What it does | Dose | Evidence | Citations |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| [Salonpas Pain Relieving Patch (Methyl Salicylate + Menthol)](https://magellanlongevity.com/p/216.md) | The single cheapest item in the entire Magellan catalog. A methyl salicylate and menthol patch that stays put over a specific sore spot. | One patch to the painful area, up to twice daily. Do not apply heat over it. | A scoping review found topical NSAIDs effective and well tolerated for acute musculoskeletal pain, with the methyl salicylate/menthol patch among the interventions covered. | [16] |
| [Capzasin-HP Capsaicin 0.1% Pain Relief Cream](https://magellanlongevity.com/p/213.md) | Capsaicin depletes substance P from local pain fibers — slow to start, but it addresses the nerve signal rather than masking it. | Apply 3–4 times daily; it takes 1–2 weeks of consistent use to work. Wash hands thoroughly and keep it away from eyes. | A meta-analysis of 8 randomized trials (n=498) found topical capsaicin superior to placebo for osteoarthritis pain (SMD −0.84), but rated the certainty low to very low, with application-site burning common (number-needed-to-harm 3). | [17] |
| [Biofreeze Menthol Pain Relief Gel](https://magellanlongevity.com/p/215.md) | Menthol acts on the TRPM8 cold receptor for immediate cooling relief — fastest onset in this tier, shortest duration. | Apply to the sore area as needed. | In a comparative trial, an ibuprofen/levomenthol gel provided superior global pain relief with a shorter time to significant relief, and was the only preparation delivering cooling for up to 2 hours. | [18] |
| [Aspercreme 4% Lidocaine Pain Relief Cream](https://magellanlongevity.com/p/214.md) | A local anesthetic that numbs the area directly — useful when the pain is superficial and nerve-related rather than deep joint pain. | Apply up to 3–4 times daily to intact skin. | In a double-blind randomized trial (n=87), an over-the-counter-strength lidocaine patch was non-inferior to the prescription 5% patch and superior to placebo for back pain and arthritis. | [19] |
| [Voltaren Arthritis Pain Gel (Diclofenac 1%)](https://magellanlongevity.com/p/212.md) | Topical diclofenac — a real NSAID delivered into the joint with a fraction of the systemic exposure of oral ibuprofen. The best-evidenced single item on this page. | Apply to the affected joint 4 times daily; allow up to 7 days for full effect. | In a Cochrane review of trials lasting 6 to 12 weeks, topical diclofenac and ketoprofen were significantly more effective than carrier for chronic musculoskeletal pain, with about 60% of participants reporting much reduced pain. | [20] |
| [MSM with OptiMSM (1,500 mg)](https://magellanlongevity.com/p/219.md) | A sulfur donor with mild anti-inflammatory and antioxidant action — the cheapest oral joint option in the catalog. | 1,500–3,000 mg/day. | In a pilot clinical trial in knee osteoarthritis, MSM produced significant decreases in WOMAC pain and physical-function impairment versus placebo (P<0.05). A pilot study, so treat the effect size as provisional. | [21] |

## Safety

### Cheap still means real pharmacology

Berberine and alpha-lipoic acid can lower blood sugar, which matters if you take insulin or a sulfonylurea. Omega-3 and quercetin mildly reduce platelet function, so hold them about a week before surgery, dental extraction or a spinal injection. Topical diclofenac carries the same NSAID cautions as the oral drug in kidney disease, though at much lower systemic exposure.

### Do not stack the topicals on the same patch of skin

Diclofenac, lidocaine, capsaicin and menthol are all drugs. Use one product per area at a time, never under a heating pad or occlusive wrap, and never on broken skin. Combining a counterirritant with heat is a genuine burn risk.

### Zinc needs a ceiling

Sustained high-dose zinc depletes copper and can cause anemia and neurological symptoms. Stay near 15–30 mg/day for ongoing use, and keep short high-dose courses short.

### Magnesium and kidney function

Magnesium loosens stools at higher doses, and should be limited or avoided in significant kidney impairment, where excretion is reduced. Start at the lower end.

### This is a budget floor, not a complete plan

Sleep, resistance training, blood-pressure control and not smoking outperform every item on this page, and cost nothing. Supplements are the smallest lever here. Educational only — talk to your clinician before starting or combining anything, especially alongside prescription medication.
