## Takeaway

Quercetin supplementation, especially at doses of 500 mg/day or more, may help reduce both systolic and diastolic blood pressure.

## The question

Does quercetin supplementation affect blood pressure?

## Hypothesis

The evidence regarding quercetin's effects on blood pressure has been inconclusive, so this meta-analysis aims to assess its impact.

## Methods

A systematic review and meta-analysis of placebo-controlled randomized controlled trials were conducted. Databases including PUBMED, Cochrane Library, Scopus, and EMBASE were searched up to January 31, 2015. Meta-analysis used either fixed-effects or random-effect models, with effect size expressed as weighted mean difference (WMD) and 95% CI.

## Results

The meta-analysis included 7 trials with 9 treatment arms and 587 patients. Quercetin supplementation significantly reduced systolic BP (WMD: -3.04 mm Hg) and diastolic BP (WMD: -2.63 mm Hg). For doses ">="500 mg/day, significant reductions were observed in systolic BP (WMD: -4.45 mm Hg) and diastolic BP (WMD: -2.98 mm Hg). Doses "<"500 mg/day did not show a significant effect on either systolic BP (WMD: -1.59 mm Hg) or diastolic BP (WMD: -0.24 mm Hg), though indirect comparison tests between doses were not significant.

## Conclusion

Quercetin supplementation has a statistically significant effect in reducing blood pressure, with this effect possibly limited to or greater with dosages of ">"500 mg/day.

## Limitations

The abstract does not explicitly state limitations of the study, but it does call for further studies to investigate clinical relevance and potential application as an add-on therapy.

## Verbatim from the abstract

> significant reductions both in systolic BP and diastolic BP following supplementation with quercetin
