# Effect of carnosine on lipid profile, fasting blood glucose, HbA1C and insulin resistance: a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

## The question

Does carnosine supplementation affect lipid profile, fasting blood glucose, HbA1C, and insulin resistance?

## Hypothesis

Carnosine supplementation may improve glucose disorders and dyslipidemia.

## Methods

A meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) was conducted by searching MEDLINE/PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science up to June 2019. The search used Medical Subject Heading and keywords. Combined effect sizes were calculated as weighted mean difference (WMD) using a random-effects model, and heterogeneity was assessed with Cochran's Q test and I .

## Results

Four RCTs, involving 184 participants, were analyzed. Carnosine intervention significantly reduced HbA1C levels (WMD: -0.92 %, 95 % CI: -1.20, -0.63, I:69 %). However, combined results from four studies with 183 participants showed no significant reduction in triglycerides (WMD: -14.46 mg/dl, 95 % CI: -29.11, 0.19, I:94 %). No significant changes were observed for HOMA-IR, Cholesterol, fasting blood sugar, or HDL-C.

## Conclusion

Carnosine supplementation decreases HbA1C but does not significantly affect HOMA-IR, Cholesterol, fasting blood sugar, triglycerides, or HDL-C.

## Limitations

The study notes that future research with larger sample sizes, varied carnosine doses, and population-specific subgroups is needed to confirm and strengthen these findings.
