## The question

Does magnesium supplementation affect blood pressure and obesity measures in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus?

## Hypothesis

The study aimed to evaluate the effects of magnesium supplementation on blood pressure and obesity measures in type 2 diabetes patients.

## Methods

A meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials (RCTs) was conducted by searching major electronic databases (Web of Science, Cochrane library, PubMed, Scopus) up to October 15, 2019. Outcomes were pooled using a random-effects model and expressed as weighted mean differences (WMD) with 95% confidence intervals (CI). Heterogeneity, sensitivity analysis, and publication bias were also assessed.

## Results

Pooling five RCTs showed that magnesium supplementation did not significantly affect body weight (WMD: -0.01 kg), BMI (WMD: -0.07), or waist circumference (WMD: 0.12). However, pooling seven RCTs showed a significant reduction in systolic blood pressure (WMD: -5.78 mmHg) and diastolic blood pressure (WMD: -2.50 mmHg). Subgroup analysis indicated that magnesium supplementation for more than 12 weeks, at doses higher than 300 mg/day, or in inorganic forms, significantly decreased both systolic and diastolic blood pressure.

## Conclusion

Magnesium supplementation has beneficial effects on blood pressure in type 2 diabetes patients, independent of body weight status.

## Limitations

The study suggests that further investigations are needed to provide more reliable evidence.
