Over an average follow-up of approximately 8 years, among 11,618 participants aged 45 and older, 1290 deaths were recorded. Greater handgrip strength was associated with a lower overall mortality risk. The adjusted ORs (comparing extreme tertiles) were 0.47 in men and 0.51 in women. This inverse association appeared stronger in younger men (OR = 0.29) compared to older men (OR = 0.49).
