## Takeaway

Remote heart rate variability biofeedback can help reduce depression and improve heart rate variability, with certain intervention characteristics enhancing its effectiveness.

## The question

What is the efficacy of remote heart rate variability biofeedback (HRV-B) interventions for mental health symptoms (depression, stress, anxiety, sleep) and heart rate variability (HRV)?

## Hypothesis

The study hypothesized that remote HRV-B interventions would be effective in improving mental health symptoms and HRV.

## Methods

A systematic literature search was conducted across five databases. Eighteen studies, comprising 1352 subjects from various populations, were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis. Meta-analysis was used to examine the effect sizes for different outcomes.

## Results

Meta-analysis revealed a medium effect size for HRV-B in improving depression (g = -0.41) and increasing HRV (g = 0.443) compared to control conditions. These findings remained significant after sensitivity analyses. The effect for stress was not significant (p = 0.152). Meta-regressions identified several moderators, including maximizing resonance, screen on the device, fewer lab visits, less than twenty minutes of daily practice, and female gender, as beneficial for intervention effectiveness.

## Conclusion

Remote HRV-B is an effective intervention for reducing depressive symptoms and increasing HRV across different populations. Certain intervention variables may influence the outcomes.

## Limitations

The abstract does not explicitly state limitations of the study.

## Verbatim from the abstract

> HRV biofeedback is effective for decreasing depressive symptoms and increasing HRV

## Effect Sizes of Remote HRV-B Interventions

| Measure | Effect Size (g) |
| --- | --- |
| Depression (g) | -0.41 |
| HRV (g) | 0.443 |

*Remote HRV-B showed a medium effect size for improving depression and increasing HRV.*
