## The question

Does hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) affect telomere length and senescent cell concentrations in healthy aging adults?

## Hypothesis

Repeated intermittent hyperoxic exposures, such as certain HBOT protocols, may induce regenerative effects that could impact telomere length and cellular senescence.

## Methods

Thirty-five healthy adults, aged 64 and older, received 60 daily HBOT exposures. Whole blood samples were collected at baseline, after 30 and 60 sessions, and 1-2 weeks post-HBOT. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were analyzed for telomere length and senescence.

## Results

Telomere length in T helper, T cytotoxic, natural killer, and B cells increased significantly by over 20% after HBOT. B cell telomere length showed the most significant increase, rising by 25.68% at session 30, 29.39% at session 60, and 37.63% post-HBOT. There was a significant decrease in senescent T helper cells by -37.30% post-HBOT and senescent T-cytotoxic cells by -10.96% post-HBOT.

## Conclusion

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) may induce significant senolytic effects in aging populations, including increasing telomere length and clearing senescent cells.

## Limitations

The study involved a specific HBOT protocol and a relatively small sample size of healthy, independently living adults, which may limit generalizability.
