## Takeaway

A combined probiotic and omega-3 supplement increased anti-inflammatory markers in elderly individuals, but did not significantly reduce hs-CRP.

## The question

Can a combined probiotic and omega-3 supplement reduce low-grade inflammation in elderly individuals?

## Hypothesis

The novel combination of a multi-strain probiotic and omega-3 supplements will reduce low-grade inflammation, as measured by high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), in elderly participants.

## Methods

This was a proof-of-concept, randomized, placebo-controlled, parallel study involving 76 community-dwelling elderly participants (median age 71.0 years). Participants received either the dual supplement (n=37) or a placebo (n=39) for eight weeks. Hs-CRP, cytokine levels, and intestinal permeability were assessed at baseline and after the intervention.

## Results

No significant difference was observed for hs-CRP between the dual supplement group and placebo. However, supplementation led to significant increases in the anti-inflammatory marker IL-10 and increased levels of valeric acid.

## Conclusion

Probiotic and omega-3 dual supplementation exerts modest effects on inflammation, as evidenced by increased IL-10 and valeric acid, and may have potential as a non-pharmacological treatment for low-grade inflammation in the elderly.

## Limitations

The study did not find a significant reduction in the primary outcome measure, hs-CRP, suggesting the effects on inflammation might be modest or require different markers.

## Verbatim from the abstract

> In older adults, multi-strain probiotic supplementation raised the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10 and short-chain fatty acids, although hs-CRP did not differ from placebo.
