## Methods

This was a randomized, placebo-controlled trial where middle-aged adults received either Urolithin A (Mitopure) at two different doses or a placebo for 4 months. The study assessed muscle strength, aerobic endurance (peak oxygen consumption), physical performance (6-minute walk test), peak power output, plasma acylcarnitines, C-reactive proteins, and expression of proteins linked to mitophagy and mitochondrial metabolism in skeletal muscle.

## Results

Urolithin A intake led to significant improvements in muscle strength (approximately 12%). Clinically meaningful improvements were observed in aerobic endurance (peak oxygen consumption) and physical performance (6-minute walk test). However, there was no significant improvement in peak power output. Plasma acylcarnitines and C-reactive proteins were significantly lower with Urolithin A, and there was a significant increase in the expression of proteins linked to mitophagy and mitochondrial metabolism in skeletal muscle.

Urolithin A improves muscle performance, muscle strength, aerobic endurance, and physical performance, and positively impacts biomarkers of mitochondrial health and inflammation in middle-aged adults.
