Among NHANES participants, the weighted mean SUA level was 5.7 mg/dL. During 57,926 person-years of follow-up, there were 1,900 deaths, with 674 attributed to CVD. Patients in the highest SUA quintile had an HR of 1.28 for all-cause mortality and 1.41 for CVD mortality compared to those in the lowest SUA quintile. The meta-analysis of 13 cohort studies showed pooled HRs of 1.08 for all-cause mortality and 1.05 for CVD mortality per 1 mg/dL increment of SUA.

Higher serum uric acid levels are associated with increased risks of both all-cause and cardiovascular disease mortality in individuals with diabetes.
