## Takeaway

OLED light at 3,000 K may be slightly less disruptive to deep sleep and late-night melatonin levels than LED light at the same color temperature.

## The question

Do OLED and LED lights at a color temperature of 3,000 K differentially affect melatonin profile, sleep, and vigilance compared to dim light?

## Hypothesis

The study investigates the effects of OLED and LED at 3,000 K on melatonin, sleep, and vigilance, following previous findings that OLED at 4,000 K caused less melatonin phase delay than LED.

## Methods

Twenty-four healthy subjects (27.5±5.1 years) were exposed to OLED, LED, or dim light (DL) from 17:30 to 24:00 in a randomized order with a 1-week interval. Saliva samples were collected hourly from 18:00 to 24:00 for melatonin analysis. Polysomnography (PSG) and a psychomotor vigilance test (PVT) were also conducted.

## Results

Melatonin onset time was significantly delayed by both OLED and LED compared to DL, with no significant difference between OLED and LED. The mean melatonin level at 24:00 was lower under LED than DL, but there was no significant difference between OLED and DL. The percentage of slow wave sleep (N3) was significantly lower in LED than in OLED.

## Conclusion

Evening light exposure can suppress late-night melatonin secretion and disturb deep sleep, with these effects being slightly worse under LED than OLED at a color temperature of 3,000 K.

## Limitations

The study design involved a specific exposure duration (17:30 to 24:00) and a single color temperature (3,000 K), which may limit generalizability to other light conditions or durations.
