## Takeaway

Daily resveratrol supplementation may help slow bone loss in the spine and hip of postmenopausal women.

## The question

Can resveratrol supplementation improve bone health in postmenopausal women?

## Hypothesis

Resveratrol supplementation will improve bone health in postmenopausal women, possibly through circulatory benefits in bone tissue, given its phytoestrogen properties and bone-protective effects observed in rodent models.

## Methods

The RESHAW trial was a 24-month randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, two-period crossover intervention. Postmenopausal women received 75 mg of resveratrol twice daily or a placebo. The study evaluated effects on cognition, cerebrovascular function, bone health, cardiometabolic markers, and well-being.

## Results

After 12 months, resveratrol supplementation increased bone density in the lumbar spine by +0.016 g/cm and in the neck of the femur by +0.005 g/cm compared to placebo. This was accompanied by a 7.24% reduction in C-terminal telopeptide type-1 collagen levels. The femoral neck T-score improved by +0.070, reducing the 10-year probability of major and hip fracture risk. The bone-protective benefit was greater in women with poor bone health biomarker status and in those who supplemented with vitamin D plus calcium.

## Conclusion

Regular supplementation with 75 mg of resveratrol twice daily has the potential to slow bone loss in the lumbar spine and femoral neck in postmenopausal women without overt osteoporosis.

## Limitations

The abstract does not explicitly state any limitations of the study.

## Verbatim from the abstract

> positive effects on bone density in the lumbar spine and femoral neck

## Change in Bone Mineral Density After 12 Months

| Measure | Change in BMD (g/cm) |
| --- | --- |
| Lumbar Spine | 0.016 |
| Femoral Neck | 0.005 |

*Resveratrol supplementation led to an increase in bone mineral density in the lumbar spine and femoral neck.*
