Akkermansia muciniphila is a mucin-degrading, Gram-negative anaerobic bacterium that resides in the intestinal mucus layer and typically represents roughly 1-5% of the human gut microbiota. A flagship pilot RCT and 2025-2026 follow-up trials show real but modest benefits on insulin sensitivity, weight and HbA1c, but the trial base is small, a 2026 multicenter trial missed its primary endpoint, and benefits may appear mainly in people with low baseline Akkermansia.
