Neither, honestly. Four-stage agreement across brands runs roughly 50–75%. WHOOP's four-stage agreement was 64% with a kappa of 0.47 and the largest REM disagreement of the group at 21 minutes; Oura's per-stage sensitivity ran about 76–80% in a laboratory comparison, and its wake-detection specificity was 0.41 across a week of unrestricted home sleep.
Oura. WHOOP is the only device in this pair that requires an ongoing subscription. Also note the FDA-cleared ECG feature sits on the more expensive WHOOP MG, not on the 5.0.
No study shows that wearing either device, or acting on its data, lengthens lifespan or prevents disease. The biomarkers they track — resting heart rate, sleep duration, steps, HRV — do robustly predict mortality in cohort research. That is a fact about the biomarkers, not about the device.
Readiness, Recovery and Strain are proprietary composites with no published validation against any reference standard. If you want the defensible outputs, they are sleep duration, nocturnal resting heart rate and the HRV trend — and activity trackers as a class do modestly increase physical activity, about 1,800 extra steps a day in an umbrella review.

That is a value judgement we cannot make for you, but note what it does not buy: Strain and Recovery are proprietary composites with no external validation, and the FDA-cleared ECG sits on a different, more expensive model.
Not validly. WHOOP's Blood Pressure Insights has never been FDA-cleared; the FDA issued a warning letter over it in July 2025 and closed that letter in June 2026 after the display changed, leaving it as an unregulated wellness output rather than a blood-pressure measurement.
