Bright Light Therapy Lamp, graded Strong-evidence on Magellan — a 2024 JAMA Psychiatry meta-analysis found roughly doubled remission (40.7% vs 23.5%) and response (60.4% vs 38.6%) rates versus controls. Timed bright light also produces small-to-medium improvements in sleep problems, including insomnia, circadian-rhythm sleep disorders, and sleep disturbance in dementia, with larger effects at higher light intensities, and early meta-analytic support extends to bipolar and perinatal depression.

What it is

A bright light therapy lamp (light box) is a device that emits high-intensity, broad-spectrum white light, typically around 10,000 lux, used for daily timed exposure, most often for about 30 minutes each morning. Light entering the retina signals the suprachiasmatic nucleus, the brain's master circadian clock, helping to entrain circadian rhythm and influencing melatonin secretion and mood-related neurotransmitters such as serotonin. Bright light therapy is an established first-line, non-pharmacological treatment for seasonal affective disorder (SAD) and has been studied as an adjunct for other depressive and sleep-wake disorders.

Its role in longevity

Randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses indicate that bright light therapy reduces depressive symptoms in seasonal affective disorder and, as an adjunct, in nonseasonal depression — a 2024 JAMA Psychiatry meta-analysis found roughly doubled remission (40.7% vs 23.5%) and response (60.4% vs 38.6%) rates versus controls — with generally mild, uncommon side effects such as eye strain and headache. Timed bright light also produces small-to-medium improvements in sleep problems, including insomnia, circadian-rhythm sleep disorders, and sleep disturbance in dementia, with larger effects at higher light intensities, and early meta-analytic support extends to bipolar and perinatal depression. Several systematic reviews still rate the evidence as low certainty because studies are small and heterogeneous, benefits depend on correct use (typically 10,000 lux for about 30 minutes each morning), blue-light variants remain unproven, and light can rarely provoke hypomania in susceptible individuals. This evidence describes bright light exposure and the underlying circadian mechanism itself, not this specific commercial lamp.
