SimPure Reverse Osmosis System, graded Emerging-evidence on Magellan — RO also takes magnesium and calcium out along with everything else, and drinking-water magnesium is inversely associated with coronary mortality in observational studies. No numeric effect size is reported for SimPure Reverse Osmosis System in Magellan's graded summary.

What it is

A reverse osmosis (RO) system purifies drinking water by forcing it under pressure through a semipermeable membrane whose extremely small pores block dissolved salts, metals, and most organic molecules while allowing water molecules through. This physical barrier can remove or greatly reduce contaminants such as arsenic, lead, nitrate, fluoride, disinfection byproducts (trihalomethanes), per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), and microplastics, and US regulators named RO among the best available point-of-use technologies under the 2024 national PFAS drinking-water standards. RO is one of the high-pressure membrane technologies recognized for broad-spectrum contaminant reduction and is commonly deployed as a point-of-use system at a kitchen tap.

Its role in longevity

The health rationale for RO rests on evidence that the contaminants it removes are linked to disease: long-term exposure to trihalomethanes is associated with bladder cancer, drinking-water nitrate with colorectal cancer, inorganic arsenic with cardiovascular disease and several cancers, lead with cardiovascular mortality and impaired child cognition, and PFAS with immune, metabolic, and reproductive effects, often at levels below current regulatory limits. Bench and field studies show point-of-use RO cuts contaminant concentrations by one to two orders of magnitude and removes metals and PFAS that basic carbon filters miss. Honest caveats: most exposure–disease links are observational, no trial shows that installing a home RO system improves health outcomes, RO strips beneficial minerals and wastes some water, and its value scales with local water quality. This literature describes the exposures and their removal in general, not this specific commercial product's performance.
