A look at the evidence for sauna, cold plunge, and red-light therapy in promoting longevity and healthspan.

One bundle: sauna, cold plunge, red-light therapy. The evidence, itemized: a 2015 JAMA Internal Medicine study linking sauna frequency to lower cardiovascular and all-cause mortality; a 2017 Journal of Physiology study of cold water and post-exercise muscle inflammation; a 2017 review of red light on cytochrome c oxidase.
Sauna's evidence is strongest; the rest preliminary; the bundle unproven.
Multiple studies support sauna bathing for longevity. A 2015 JAMA Internal Medicine paper found that increased frequency and duration of sauna use were associated with reduced risk of fatal cardiovascular events and all-cause mortality. A 2021 review in Experimental Gerontology further confirmed strong dose-dependent links between regular sauna use and lower morbidity and mortality rates. The heat exposure appears to provide beneficial stress that enhances cardiovascular function and overall resilience.
The evidence for cold water immersion and red-light therapy is more preliminary. A 2017 Journal of Physiology study showed cold plunges can reduce inflammation and influence cellular stress responses in muscle tissue after exercise. However, it's not yet clear if this translates to longevity benefits. Similarly, a 2017 AIMS Biophysics review noted that red and near-infrared light (photobiomodulation) can stimulate healing, relieve pain, and reduce inflammation by acting on cytochrome c oxidase. But more research is needed to confirm direct links to extended healthspan.
Therefore, while the sauna component has robust evidence for promoting longevity, the cold plunge and red-light elements show potential but require further study. Users should be aware that the overall bundle's effectiveness is not yet proven by rigorous clinical trials. Realistic expectations would be improved cardiovascular health and recovery from the sauna, with possible additional benefits from the other modalities. As always, consult your doctor before starting any new health regimen. Educational, not medical advice.
The sauna element has strong evidence for longevity benefits, while cold plunge and red light show preliminary promise but need more research to confirm healthspan effects.
