Pistachio & Tart Cherry Sleep Granola

Tart cherries are one of the few foods with actual randomized sleep data behind them. A pilot crossover trial in older adults with insomnia (Journal of Medicinal Food, 2010) found that tart cherry juice modestly improved insomnia severity compared with placebo — improvements the authors were careful to note were smaller than those seen with hypnotic drugs. A second placebo-controlled study (European Journal of Nutrition, 2012) measured the mechanism: tart cherry juice raised circulating melatonin and nudged total sleep time and sleep efficiency upward in healthy adults. Both trials used concentrated juice twice daily — a bigger dose than a handful of dried cherries, which is worth remembering before crediting your granola.

The supporting cast has its own evidence. Pistachios register some of the highest melatonin readings of any food in laboratory assays, though that finding has not yet been carried into human sleep trials. Magnesium, supplied here by pumpkin seeds and oats, was tested in a double-blind trial in elderly adults with insomnia (Journal of Research in Medical Sciences, 2012) and improved sleep time and early-morning waking versus placebo. The oats also bring beta-glucan, whose cholesterol-lowering effect is one of the better-replicated findings in nutrition — a meta-analysis of randomized trials (The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 2014) put the LDL reduction at about 0.25 mmol/L for roughly 3 g per day. Reasonable evidence for the parts; the whole remains untested.

Why this works

Dried tart cherries contribute both melatonin and the anthocyanins that give them their color. Pistachios add plant melatonin plus protein and fat that slow the release of the honey's sugars. Pumpkin seeds are among the densest food sources of magnesium — about 150 mg per ounce — and rolled oats supply beta-glucan fiber along with more magnesium. Cinnamon and a restrained pour of honey bind the clusters with less sugar than most store granolas, and serving it over plain yogurt adds fermented dairy and enough protein to make it a genuine evening snack rather than dessert.

Pistachio & Tart Cherry Sleep Granola ingredients
The ingredients that do the work: rolled oats, shelled pistachios, dried tart cherries, pumpkin seeds.

How to make it

  1. Heat the oven to 300°F (150°C) and line a sheet pan with parchment.
  2. Toss 3 cups rolled oats, 1 cup roughly chopped pistachios, and ½ cup pumpkin seeds with ¼ cup melted coconut oil, ⅓ cup honey, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, and ¼ teaspoon salt.
  3. Press into an even layer and bake 25–30 minutes, rotating the pan once, until golden — resist stirring so clusters can form.
  4. Cool completely on the pan, then break into clumps and fold in 1 cup dried tart cherries.
  5. Store airtight for up to 2 weeks.

Serve ½ cup over plain yogurt an hour or two before bed, or at breakfast — the ingredients do not check the clock.

The takeaway. Tart cherry juice has genuinely improved sleep measures in small randomized trials; dried cherries in granola deliver a smaller dose of the same compounds alongside magnesium and beta-glucan with their own evidence.
