What it is

The FreeStyle Libre is a factory-calibrated, intermittently scanned ("flash") continuous glucose monitor made by Abbott. A small sensor worn on the back of the upper arm measures glucose in the interstitial fluid just below the skin and reports current glucose, a trend arrow, and glucose history when scanned or read by a phone, replacing routine fingerstick self-monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG). Beyond a single reading, such devices generate summary metrics like time in range (TIR), time below and above range, and glycemic variability that describe day-to-day glucose control. Since 2024, several CGM systems—including ones built on the Libre platform—have been cleared for over-the-counter sale in the U.S., moving glucose monitoring from a prescription diabetes tool into the consumer wellness space.

Its role in longevity

In randomized trials and meta-analyses, continuous and flash glucose monitoring modestly lowers HbA1c (about 0.2–0.3 percentage points on average) and, more strikingly, cuts time spent in hypoglycemia—by 38% in type 1 diabetes and by roughly half in insulin-treated type 2 diabetes—compared with fingerstick testing; in non-insulin-treated type 2 diabetes it raised time in range by about 10% over education alone. The derived metric time in range is validated against long-term microvascular complications such as retinopathy, giving CGM data prognostic meaning. The caveats matter: HbA1c did not improve in the insulin-treated type 2 trial, most trials were short and open-label, hard-endpoint data are scarce, and regulators have recalled certain sensor lots for inaccurate readings. For people without diabetes—the biohacking use case—evidence is weak: a 2024 meta-analysis of CGM as a behavior-change tool found only modest short-term glycemic changes, driven mostly by participants with diabetes, and no significant effect on weight; no trial shows disease-prevention or lifespan benefit.
