A look at the research behind NMN supplementation for healthspan and longevity.

Behind every NMN capsule is an old wish: if a vital coenzyme fades as we age, maybe swallowing its precursor buys some of it back. NMN converts to NAD⁺—the coenzyme behind energy metabolism, DNA repair, and gene expression—and NAD⁺ levels do tend to decline with age. What the evidence has not yet established is that replenishing it slows or reverses aging in people.
In animal studies, NMN supplementation has been shown to increase NAD⁺ concentrations and improve healthspan and lifespan with great safety. These promising results have led to human clinical trials. For example, a 2023 study in Advances in Nutrition noted that NAD⁺ levels in various human tissues decrease with age, suggesting that boosting NAD⁺ could influence the aging process.
One small randomized controlled trial published in Scientific Reports in 2023 found that long-term NMN supplementation showed potential in alleviating arterial stiffness, a marker of cardiovascular aging. Another study in Frontiers in Aging in 2024 reported physical performance improvements from NMN that tracked the rise in blood NAD⁺ levels, with benefits maximized around 600 mg/day in a dose-dependent trial.
However, the research on NMN in humans is still in its early stages. While the initial results are encouraging, larger and longer-term studies are needed to fully understand the potential benefits and risks of NMN supplementation for healthspan and longevity in humans. The effects may also vary between individuals. Educational, not medical advice.
The available evidence suggests NMN supplementation can increase NAD⁺ levels and may offer some benefits for certain aspects of healthspan, but more research is needed to confirm its effects on longevity.
