Cacao–Avocado Magnesium Smoothie

Raw cacao is one of the most concentrated food sources of magnesium, and this smoothie stacks it with avocado, banana, and almond butter — three more foods that contribute meaningful magnesium and potassium. The trial evidence on magnesium is real but modest: a meta-analysis of randomized double-blind, placebo-controlled trials (Hypertension, 2016) found that supplementation lowered blood pressure by roughly 2 mmHg systolic — measurable, not dramatic, and achieved with supplement doses rather than smoothies. On the intake side, a meta-analysis of prospective cohorts (Diabetes Care, 2011) associated each 100 mg per day increment of dietary magnesium with about a 14% lower risk of type 2 diabetes, the kind of association that supports eating this way without proving cause.

Cocoa flavanols have been tested harder than most food compounds, with mixed results worth stating plainly. The large COSMOS randomized trial of cocoa extract (The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 2022) missed its primary endpoint — total cardiovascular events were not significantly reduced — though cardiovascular death, a secondary outcome, was 27% lower. A smaller trial in older adults with mild cognitive impairment (Hypertension, 2012) reported better cognitive scores, blood pressure, and insulin sensitivity after eight weeks of high-flavanol cocoa. And a large systematic review (BMJ, 2013) tied higher potassium intake to lower blood pressure and a lower risk of stroke. Supportive signals from several directions; none of them proof that one smoothie changes anything.

Why this works

Raw cacao powder delivers both cocoa flavanols and around 50 mg of magnesium per two tablespoons, more than most foods can claim in one scoop. Avocado and banana carry the potassium — together close to a gram — plus the fat and fiber that make the texture thick enough to eat with a spoon. Almond butter adds another 45 mg of magnesium and keeps the glycemic load in check, while Medjool dates sweeten it with whole fruit rather than syrup. Nothing here depends on an exotic ingredient doing something magical; it is ordinary foods that happen to sit at the top of the magnesium and potassium tables.

Cacao–Avocado Magnesium Smoothie ingredients
The ingredients that do the work: raw cacao powder, avocados, bananas, medjool dates.

How to make it

  1. Soak 2 pitted Medjool dates in hot water for 5 minutes if they are firm; drain.
  2. Add 1 cup almond milk, half a ripe avocado, 1 frozen banana, 2 tablespoons raw cacao powder, 1 tablespoon almond butter, the dates, and a pinch of salt to a blender.
  3. Blend on high for 60–90 seconds until completely smooth, adding more almond milk a splash at a time if it is too thick to move.
  4. Taste — if your cacao runs bitter, add one more date rather than reaching for sweetener.
  5. Pour into a glass and top with a teaspoon of cacao nibs and a light dusting of cacao.

Serves one generously as breakfast or two as a snack; drink it soon after blending, before the avocado oxidizes.

The takeaway. Magnesium and potassium have consistent meta-analytic links to better blood pressure, and cocoa flavanols have trial support for vascular outcomes — but the effects are modest, and a smoothie is a sensible habit, not a treatment.
