What it is

A weighted blanket is a blanket filled with materials such as plastic pellets, glass beads, or metal chains that make it substantially heavier than an ordinary blanket, typically around 10% of the user's body weight. It is designed to deliver deep pressure stimulation (also called deep touch pressure), a firm, evenly distributed tactile input comparable to a hug or to swaddling. This input is hypothesized to shift autonomic balance toward parasympathetic activity, and in laboratory studies it has been associated with increased pre-sleep salivary melatonin and reduced physiological markers of stress. Weighted blankets are used chiefly as a non-pharmacological aid for anxiety and insomnia.

Its role in longevity

Across randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses, weighted blankets have most consistently shown modest reductions in anxiety and in self-reported insomnia severity, particularly among adults with psychiatric conditions—one well-designed trial in that population reported a large effect on insomnia severity, maintained at 12-month follow-up, and a 2024 pilot trial in adults with clinical insomnia also found improved sleep quality. They appear safe, with no serious adverse events reported. The evidence is weaker and more mixed for objectively measured sleep and for children with autism, where a major pediatric trial and an American Academy of Neurology guideline found no clear benefit for sleep duration, and a placebo component is likely to contribute to perceived improvement. A laboratory study found a larger pre-sleep melatonin rise with a weighted blanket, but the hypothesized oxytocin and cortisol calming pathway was not confirmed. This body of evidence describes deep-pressure stimulation and weighted blankets as a general modality, not this specific commercial product.
