A percussive massage gun (a percussive- or vibration-therapy device) is a handheld motorized tool that delivers rapid, repetitive pulses of pressure, often up to roughly 40 percussions per second, into muscle and fascia. It is designed to mimic deep-tissue massage; proposed mechanisms include increased local blood flow, stimulation of skin and muscle mechanoreceptors and proprioceptors, and neuromuscular modulation that can transiently reduce muscle tone and stiffness. Massage guns are widely used by athletes and physically active people for warm-up and post-exercise recovery.
Systematic reviews of controlled trials indicate that percussive massage acutely increases joint range of motion and flexibility without reducing strength, and randomized trials report less muscle stiffness and soreness and faster recovery after fatiguing exercise. Newer trials extend possible benefits to clinical populations, including less pain and better function after ACL reconstruction and reduced thoracolumbar fascia thickness in people with chronic low back pain. The evidence is mixed and honest: in several trials percussive or vibration therapy was no better than passive rest, stretching, or foam rolling, and used immediately before activity it does not improve — and may transiently reduce — maximal strength, balance, and explosive performance. Studies are mostly small, short-term, and in young athletic adults, and no trial has linked massage-gun use to aging-related outcomes such as sarcopenia or mobility in older adults. This evidence concerns percussive/vibration therapy and its mechanisms in general, not this specific commercial product.
