Oxidative stress links irregular sleep and increased cardiovascular risk in young adults with chronic anxiety, and antioxidants may help improve blood pressure control.
The question
Does oxidative stress mediate the link between sleep irregularity and impaired vascular function and blood pressure control in young adults with chronic anxiety?
What they tested
The study hypothesized that impairments in vascular function and blood pressure control associated with sleep irregularity in young adults with chronic anxiety are driven by elevations in oxidative stress.
How they did it
Twenty-five young adults (24 ± 4 yr) with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) or elevated GAD symptoms were divided into high and low total sleep time irregularity (TSTI) groups based on wrist-worn accelerometry. Oxidative stress (whole blood superoxide levels), vascular function (exercise-induced flow-mediated dilation), and blood pressure control (cardiovagal baroreflex sensitivity) were measured in both groups after acute supplementation with either antioxidants (alpha-lipoic acid, vitamin C, and vitamin E) or a placebo.
What they found
The high TSTI group showed significantly greater oxidative stress, lower vascular function, and lower blood pressure control. Antioxidant supplementation significantly improved oxidative stress and blood pressure control in the high TSTI group. Vascular function improved significantly with antioxidant supplementation, independent of the group.
What it means
Oxidative stress is a key mechanism linking sleep irregularity and cardiovascular disease risk in young adults with chronic anxiety. Antioxidant supplementation reduced oxidative stress and normalized blood pressure control differences between groups, suggesting its role as a mediator.

Alpha-Lipoic Acid (ALA)
The best-supported clinical use of ALA is for symptomatic diabetic peripheral neuropathy: randomized trials and meta-analyses, including the SYDNEY 2 and ALADIN programs, indicate that intravenous and oral ALA can reduce neuropathic pain, burning and numbness, with 600 mg/day identified as the optimal dose, although…
Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA), also called thioctic acid, is a naturally occurring sulfur-containing compound…
